Commissioning Field Lessons - Major Activity Focus

Written and experienced by me, not an algorithm

The most successful project teams I’ve worked with know the importance of focusing on major commissioning activities as milestones to drive focus and results. These major activities bring teams together and they break a project up in to achievable chunks that are easy to communicate and understand.

What is deemed ‘major’ depends on the scale of the project and type of process but typical examples include site wide utility flushes, permanent power availability, ESD tests, turbine first fires etc.

I believe there are some relatively simple steps a project can take to dramatically increase the likelihood of these activities being successful and bringing projects teams together;

✅ early identification of an ‘owner’ or ‘lead’ for the activity/milestone

✅ producing procedures EARLY

✅ identify utilities and enabling systems that are required (and start thinking about potential workarounds)

✅ start the conversations about potential SIMOPs and safety considerations (e.g. PTW, exclusion zones etc.)

The planning and execution of major activities is probably my favourite part of commissioning and at RFC Consultants I’m able to support projects at various stages of the process – reach out today to discuss how.
